Monmouth cap n. a kind of round knitted woollen cap which was often worn by soldiers and sailors.The shape of such caps varied over the years, but they were usually narrow-brimmed, and might in the 17th cent. have a long peaked top which fell to one side. They were made in Monmouth in the 16th cent., but by the mid 17th cent. the name was used of caps made elsewhere.
