Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -pathy comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -pathy comb. form. In sense 2 after Hellenistic Greek μονοπάθεια.R. G. Mayne gives a Latin form monopathia (see quot. 1857 at monopathic adj.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mǫ̆nǫ·păþi) /məˈnɒpəθɪ/.
Obsolete.
1. Solitary suffering. rare.
