Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French moineau.
Etymology: < Middle French moineau (late 15th cent.; also in sense ‘corner bastion’), metaphorical application of moineau sparrow (c1200 in Old French as moinnel ) < moine (see monk n.1) + -el , -eau -el suffix2, on account of the similarity of the bird's plumage to a monk's habit.With the sense development compare corbel n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (moi·no, ‖mwano) /ˈmɔɪnəʊ/ /mwano/. Whether the word was ever sufficiently current in English to have a settled pronunciation seems doubtful.
Fortification. Obsolete. rare.
A small low bastion placed in front of a long curtain wall, or in front of a projected fortification during construction.
