Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monocōlī , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin monocōlī (masculine plural), the name of a fabulous race of men with only one leg ( < ancient Greek μονόκωλος of one clause, of one kind, of one storey, in Hellenistic Greek also as noun, denoting a bandage for one limb < μονο- mono- comb. form + κῶλον limb: see colon n.2) + -ous suffix.
Obsolete.
One-legged.Apparently an isolated use.
