Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. In quot. a1527 used as a variant of tout v.1, perhaps influenced by peep v.1, peek v.1, or keek v.; in later use perhaps an independent formation related to these.Perhaps compare also (especially with sense 1a) Norwegian titte to look furtively, Swedish titta to look furtively, Danish titte to look furtively, to stick out, protrude (already in early modern Danish), probably of expressive origin.
Scottish.
