Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French monstre.
Etymology: Apparently < French monstre (although this is first attested slightly later), use as adjective of monstre monster n. Compare earlier monster adj.Not fully naturalized in English. N.E.D. (1908) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (moṅstr) /mɔ̃str/.
Now rare.
