Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mostra.
Etymology: < Italian mostra a display, show, mark (a1292; a1705 as a musical term) < mostrare to show, display (a1294) < classical Latin mōnstrāre (see monstrate v.).
Music. rare. Now historical.
A small mark at the end of a line (or page) of music indicating the note with which the next line (or page) begins; = direct n. 2. Also: a sign indicating the place in a line of music where a new musical subject begins.
