Origin: A borrowing from Wemba-Wemba. Etymon: Wemba-Wemba mumba.
Etymology: < Wemba-Wemba (Victoria, or another Australian Aboriginal language of this area: see note below) mumba, lit. ‘bottom and——’ ( < mum bottom, buttocks + -ba and), misapprehended or euphemistically interpreted when applied to the carnival as meaning ‘let's get together and have fun’.The elements mum and -ba (also as -pa) are common to many Australian Aboriginal languages of western, central, and southern Victoria, including Wemba-Wemba, Wathawurung, and Wuywurung.
