Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian motoscafo.
Etymology: < Italian motoscafo (1921) < moto- moto- comb. form + scafo hull of a ship (1612) < ancient Greek σκάϕος hull of a ship, cognate with σκάϕη boat (see scaf n.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (mōutoskā·fo) /motoˈskafo/. In plural form motoscafi after the Italian plural form.
In Italy: a motor boat, esp. one used to carry passengers on the Venetian canals.
