Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian muffuletta.
Etymology: < Italian regional (Sicily) muffuletta a round hollow-centred loaf of bread, perhaps < muffola (1550 in sense ‘muffle’ (muffle n.5), probably < Middle French moufle : see muffle n.2) + -etta (see -et suffix1), although this is uncertain and disputed. Perhaps compare Italian muffuliette Sicilian soft rolls flavoured with saffron and anise.The muffuletta is said to have been created by Salvatore Lupo, the proprietor of the Central Grocery, New Orleans, at the beginning of the 20th cent.
U.S.
A thick sandwich filled with charcuterie and olive paste, a speciality of the Italian community in New Orleans. More fully muffuletta sandwich.
