Origin: A borrowing from Kikuyu. Etymon: Kikuyu mũhoi.
Etymology: < Kikuyu mũhoi < mũ- , singular class prefix denoting a person and forming agent nouns + -hoi supplicant, tenant at will < -hoya to ask for, to beg, here with specific reference to the phrase -hoya wako to apply for a wako , i.e. a piece of land on which to build and settle. Compare ahoi n.The Kikuyu plural form is ahoi (see ahoi n.); consequently, ahoi n. is also used as the plural of muhoi n. in English.
East African.
A person who has been given the right to cultivate a plot of land without payment; a tenant at will. Cf. ahoi n. (the usual plural form).
