Compare also muletto n.The use of French mulet in sense 3 is after Portuguese muleta (15th or 16th cent. in this sense). The word is attested from the early 13th cent. as a surname, as e.g. Ricardus Mulet (1205), Petrum Mulet (1233), though it is unclear whether these are to be interpreted as Middle English or Anglo-Norman.
