Etymology: < needle n. + fish n.1 Compare Dutch naaldvis (19th cent. or earlier), German Nadelfisch (1st half of the 18th cent. or earlier), Danish nålefisk.In quot. 1601 translating classical Latin belonē pipefish (Pliny) < ancient Greek βελόνη needle, pipefish (see Belone n.). The French texts corresponding to quot. 1601 and quot. 1666 both have eguille.
Any of various fishes with elongated bodies; spec. any fish of the family Belonidae, which comprises the garfishes and long-toms, characterized by long and slender bodies and long beak-like jaws.
