Inflections: Plural unchanged, Murias.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi *muriyā.

Generally a distinction is made between the lowland Muria of the Bastar District of Chhattisgarh on the one hand and the Hill Maria of Abujhmar and the Dandami (or Bison-horn) Maria on the other. Compare:1938 W. V. Grigson Maria Gonds of Bastar iii. 49 ‘Muria’ is a term coined by non-Koitor for those Koitor [i.e. Gonds] who are somewhat less un-Hinduized than the primitive Marias and is used by any section of Marias as soon as it wishes to claim social advancement.
