Etymology: Origin unknown. N.E.D. (1908) s.v. suggests a connection with merrow adj., while Sc. National Dict. s.v. suggests a frequentative formation < a base cognate with or related to Icelandic mor dust (compare also Scots murr small particle or fragment, morsel (from mid 19th cent.)).
Now Scottish.
