Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mystacoceti.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mystacoceti, suborder name (W. H. Flower 1869, in Trans. Zool. Soc. 6 10, replacing earlier Mysticete : see Mysticete n.2) < ancient Greek μυστακ- , μύσταξ moustache (see mystax n.) + κῆτος whale (see cet- comb. form).
Zoology. Now rare.
A whale of the suborder Mysticeti (formerly also called Mystacoceti) of baleen or whalebone whales. Cf. mysticete n.1
