Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin muscae volitantes.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin muscae volitantes (1597 or earlier) < classical Latin muscae , plural of musca fly (see Musca n.) + volitantēs , plural of volitāns , present participle of volitāre to fly about (see volitate v.).
Chiefly Ophthalmology.
Small moving spots in the field of vision representing a normal or sometimes pathological phenomenon usually caused by opacities in the vitreous humour of the eye. Also called floaters.

1715 J. T. Desaguliers in A. Pitcairn Wks. To Transl. sig. av The Muscae volitantes, or small Bodies, like Flies or Spiders, which appear to fly or swim about the Air, before the Eye.
1753 Chambers's Cycl. Suppl. Muscæ Volitantes, dark, irregular veins and spots, seeming to fly before the eyes.., especially on looking at bright objects.
1786 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 76 318 A dark spot is seen resembling the shape of the sun, or other luminous object which we last beheld. This is the source of one kind of the dark coloured muscæ volitantes.
1829 S. Cooper Good's Study Med. (ed. 3) IV. 215 Of the ocular spectres, constituting the first variety [of paropsis illusoria], one of the most frequent forms is that of dark spots. These are the muscæ volitantes of many authors.
