baikien.2

Brit. /ˈbeɪki/, U.S. /ˈbeɪki/, Scottish English /ˈbekɪ/
Forms: pre-1700 1700s–1900s bakie, 1700s baickie, 1800s bakey, 1900s baiky, 1800s backie, 1900s– baikie.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: backet n., -y suffix6; Dutch bakje.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably either (i) an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -y suffix6) of backet n., or (ii) < Dutch bakje, denoting various kinds of container (diminutive of bak : see bakkie n.); with the uses of the Scots word compare e.g. Dutch asbak square wooden container for ash and rubbish (1630; now usually in the sense ʻashtrayʼ) and kolenbak iron vessel used to carry coals to a domestic fireplace (1710). Compare later back n.2The development shown by the stem vowel is difficult to explain in either case, although it is possible that backet n. might be old enough to have a variant with a long vowel on account of open syllable lengthening.
Scottish.
A square wooden vessel with handles, used to carry lime, coal, ash, etc.
