Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu mašʿal.
Etymology: < Urdu mašʿal (also with colloquial pronunciation mašāl) < Persian mašʿal < Arabic mašʿal < šaʿala to light (a fire).
Anglo-Indian and (now rare) Caribbean.
A torch. Also: †a torch-bearer (cf. mussalchee n.). Also mussal torch.
