单词 musteline
释义

mustelineadj.1n.1

Brit. /ˈmʌstᵻlʌɪn/, /ˈmʌstᵻlɪn/, U.S. /ˈməstəˌlaɪn/, /ˈməstələn/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mustēlīnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin mustēlīnus of or belonging to a weasel < mustēla (also mustella ) weasel, of uncertain origin (perhaps related to mūs mouse n.) + -īnus -ine suffix1. In specific use after scientific Latin Mustelidae, family name (see mustelid n. and adj.) or Mustelinae, subfamily name (T. Gill 1872, in Smithsonian Misc. Coll. 11 § i. 5; compare earlier Mustelina , J. E. Gray in Ann. Philos. 26 (Nov.) 339). With use as noun compare also French mustélins (plural, 1818 glossing scientific Latin Mustelini : see mustelid n. and adj.). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (mɒ·stĭlin) /ˈmʌstɪlɪn/.
