单词 bully rook
释义

bully rookn.

Forms: 1600s bully rooke, 1600s–1800s bully rock, 1600s–1800s bully rook.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bully n.1, rook n.1
Etymology: < bully n.1 + rook n.1 (compare rook n.1 2a). The positive meaning in sense 1 perhaps arose as a playful form of address (compare e.g. rogue n. 3), particularly if (as seems likely) most later use in this sense directly or indirectly echoes quot. 1602.
Obsolete.
1. A good companion; spec. a friend with whom one associates in feasting, drinking, and merrymaking; a goodfellow (goodfellow n. 1). Frequently as a familiar form of address (cf. bully n.1 1).
