Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French métairie.
Etymology: < French métairie (1509 in Middle French; c1200 in Old French as moitoierie ) < métayer métayer n. + -erie -ery suffix. Compare post-classical Latin metaria (from 1115; a1200 in a British source), medietaria (from 1084; 12th cent. in British sources). Compare métayage n. and metaying n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (metęri) /metɛri/.
