Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nabeshima.
Etymology: < Nabeshima, the name of a baronial family in feudal Japan, adopted by them from the name of a place in Hizen province (now in Saga Prefecture) where they settled in the late 15th cent. and to which they later brought potters from Korea to produce porcelain (see below). Compare earlier Nabeshimayaki n. and the following:1910 G. H. Blakeslee China & Far East xx. 372 It was following this invasion [of Korea in the 16th cent.] that General Nabeshima gathered up all the Korean potters, skilled in the manufacture of the far-famed Korean pottery... From their descendants came the delightful ware for which Japan is so justly famed to-day.
