Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ναύκραρος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ναύκραρος the chief official of an administrative division < ναῦς ship (see nave n.2) + a second element cognate with κάρα head (see cranium n.). Compare earlier naucrary n.Each naucrary was responsible for providing a galley with its crew. The form ancient Greek ναύκληρος, also recorded in the sense ‘shipowner’, represents a variant of ναύκραρος with dissimilation of -ρ-.

A member of a naucrary; a householder in classical Greek Athens.

1847 G. Grote Hist. Greece III. 71 The Naukrary is a local circumscription, composed of the Naukrars or principal householders (so the etymology seems to indicate).
1860 New Englander (New Haven, Connecticut) Aug. 660 The aggregate of the naukrars in the naukraries was the same as that of the gennets in the gentes.
