neural crest n. †(a) Zoology a crest on a neural bone or bone of the axial skeleton (obsolete); (b) Embryology a band of neuroectodermal tissue on each side of the line of closure of the neural tube, which separates into clusters of cells that give rise to various components of the peripheral nervous system, the adrenal medulla, pigment cells of the skin, etc.
