Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French navette.
Etymology: < French navette rape plant (1600), rape seed (early 14th cent. in Old French) < Old French nef rape plant (see navet n.2) + -ette -ette suffix. Compare navet n.2, navew n.
Obsolete.
Rape, Brassica napus subsp. oleifera, of the form grown for its oil-rich seeds; oilseed rape. Cf. navet n.2, navew n.French navette is applied to the oilseed rape, navet to the edible-rooted variety.

Etymology: < French navette navet n.1, although this specific sense is not recorded in French dictionaries. Compare Italian navetta (1970 in this sense).
A cut of jewel in the shape of a pointed oval; a jewel cut in such a shape. Frequently attributive. Cf. marquise n. 4b.
