Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi nīm.
Etymology: < Hindi nīm < Sanskrit nimba. Compare Marathi nimb ( > Portuguese nimbo, 16th cent.), Sinhala nim̆ba.Forms with initial l- ( < Gujarati limb ) are also occasionally attested: compare quot. a1819 at sense 1.
1. More fully neem tree. A tree, Azadirachta indica (family Meliaceae), widely found in South Asia, where it is valued for its leaves and bitter bark which are used medicinally, and for the oil of its seeds which is used in soaps. Cf. margosa n. 1.
