Etymology: < necro- comb. form + bacillus n. + -osis suffix. Compare actinobacillosis n. Bacillus necrophorus was a former name of the causative organism.

Disease caused by the Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum, affecting domestic and wild animals and (less commonly) humans; an instance or form of this.Necrobacillosis takes different forms in different species of animal, but often causes ulcerated necrotic lesions of the skin, sometimes leading to septicaemia and disseminated abscess formation. In humans the primary infection is usually in the oropharynx, and metastatic spread of the infection is common.

1961 M. Hynes Med. Bacteriol. (ed. 7) xii. 172 F[usiformis] necrophorus (Bacteroides funduliformis) causes calf diphtheria and other animal diseases. In man it is the cause of various infections grouped together as necrobacillosis.
