Etymology: < Negro n. + head n.1 Compare earlier Negro's head n. at Negro n. and adj. Compounds 3. Compare also niggerhead n.In sense 4 apparently after Spanish cabeça de negro (see quot. 1877 at sense 4). Compare French tête de nègre (19th cent. in different senses, but compare quot. 1781 at sense 1). It is uncertain what is denoted by negroes-head in the following:a1706 J. Evelyn Sylva (1776) i. i. 7 Aborigines [i.e. indigenous plants] descended immediately from the genius of the soils, climate.., and (like the Negroes-heads in the Barbadoes) as some imagine, even without seed, or at least any perceptible rudiment.
1. The round, dark nest constructed in trees by certain species of termite (genus Nasutitermes). rare.
