Etymology: In α. forms probably < Arabic Nasṭūrī (plural Nasṭūrīyyūn, Nasāṭira) a Nestorian (see Nestorian n. and adj.¹), perhaps either confused by English-speaking travellers with the etymon of the β. forms, or understood by them to refer, among Muslims, to any Christian. In β. forms < Arabic Naṣrānī (plural Naṣārā) (pejorative) a Christian < Syriac nāṣrāyā (see Nazarean n.); use in South Asian contexts represents Malayalam nasrāṇi.

Chiefly among Muslims: a Christian; cf. Nazarene adj. 1. Occasionally also spec.: (a) a Christian living in a predominantly Muslim country; (b) a member of a particular Christian sect or community, esp. one of the ancient Christian communities of South India.In quot. 1612 perhaps meaning ‘a Nestorian’ but confused with Nazarite n. 3a.
