Etymology: < neo- comb. form + Arctic adj.; apparently coined by P. L. Sclater (see quot. 1858 at sense A.). Compare Palaearctic adj.

Designating a biogeographical region which includes North America south to the Mexican plateau, with Greenland; of, relating to, or inhabiting this region. Cf. holarctic adj., neotropical adj., Palaearctic adj.This term is used chiefly in zoology; the form Neoarctic is now rare and confined mainly to botany.
