Origin: Probably a borrowing from Norn.
Etymology: Probably < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic hnípa to be downcast, droop, Faroese nípa to bow the head, droop < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian kniaubtis to hide one's face, kniubti to kneel with one's face downwards, incline, bend.
Scottish (Shetland).
intransitive. To nod from drowsiness, to doze; (also) to droop. Also figurative.
