(The name of) any of various official organizations, esp. in Great Britain (from 1949 to 1973) and the United States, responsible for the conservation and study of flora and fauna and the natural environment (with capital initials). Also: nature conservation; a nature reserve.The Nature Conservancy was set up in Britain by Act of Parliament in 1949 and had responsibility for running nature reserves and research stations and for administering wildlife legislation (now historical).
