Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; apparently originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: semi- prefix, species n.
Etymology: < semi- prefix + species n., apparently originally after German Halbart, literally ‘half-species’ (mid 18th cent.). Compare earlier subspecies n.
Chiefly Biology.
A subdivision of a species, esp. one regarded as having more individuality than does a subspecies; spec. each of two or more biological subspecies (or species) that together constitute a superspecies.
