Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Nicodemite.
Etymology: < Middle French Nicodemite (1544 in Calvin) < post-classical Latin Nicodemus (Vulgate; < Hellenistic Greek Νικόδημος , the name of the Jewish ruler who visited Jesus by night (see note below)) + Middle French -ite -ite suffix1. Compare French nicodème a simple or naive person (1662 as nicodeme).
Now chiefly historical.
A person who resembles Nicodemus; a secret or timid adherent; spec. a Protestant living in a Catholic country in the 16th cent. who concealed his or her faith to escape persecution.Nicodemus was afraid of being seen with Jesus and visited him at night (John 3:1 ff.).
