Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nerita.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nerita Nerita n. Compare Middle French, French nérite (1558).In quot. 1708 at α. , apparently after scientific Latin Nerites, denoting a fossil Nerita ( < Nerita Nerita n. with alteration of the suffix to -ites -ite suffix1).
Zoology.
Originally: a living or fossil Nerita. Later also: any member of the suborder Neritopsina of molluscs (to which the genus Nerita belongs), which comprises prosobranch gastropods which typically have globose, brightly marked shells and are found chiefly in warm and tropical seas.
