Etymology: As noun < new adj. + catholic n., after German Neukatholik (1845 or earlier in this sense). As adjective < new adj. + catholic adj., after German neukatholisch (1844 in this sense). Compare slightly earlier German Catholic adj. and also German Catholic n.
Now historical.
A. n.
A member of a religious group in Germany that separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1844; = German Catholic n.The group separated from the Roman Catholic Church following the excommunication of Johannes Ronge, who became one of its founding members. The New Catholics (also and later chiefly called the German Catholics) had a simple doctrine focusing on the authority of the Bible, rejecting the authority of the Pope, and acknowledging only two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. By 1860, many of the New Catholic congregations had dissolved, and the majority of New Catholics joined Protestant churches. The movement was largely superseded by the Old Catholic Church (see Old Catholic n. 2).
