1930 J. Cowan Maori Yesterday & To-day ii. 28 Describing the Ngapuhi people.., he says, ‘Their colour is..like the people of Southern Europe.’
1966 Encycl. N.Z. II. 468/2 As early European settlement was mainly concentrated in the North Auckland area, Ngapuhi were thus well placed for the acquisition of muskets, and they were not backward in the use of these new weapons against their neighbours.
