Origin: A borrowing from various Polynesian languages. Etymons: Maori noa; Hawaiian noa; Tahitian noa.
Etymology: Partly < Maori noa (1815 in T. Kendall New Zealanders' First Bk. 8, glossed ‘common’) and partly < cognate words in other eastern Polynesian languages, e.g. Hawaiian noa, Tahitian noa common, not sacred.
1. In Polynesia (including New Zealand): unaffected by or free from taboo; not set apart for or consecrated to a special use; in general or common use. Opposed to taboo. Also as n.
