Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Nigritia , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Nigritia, a name for the region of central Africa influenced by Muslim civilization (corresponding to a large tract of sub-Saharan Africa running from the Atlantic in the west to the Red Sea in the east; also called Negroland n. and Sudan n.: see note) + -an suffix. Compare French Nigritie (1689). Compare also Nigritic n. and adj.Post-classical Latin Nigritia is < classical Latin Nigrītae Nigrite n.1 + -ia -ia suffix1, after Arabic Bilād al-Sūdān, lit. ‘land of the Blacks’. Compare classical Latin nigritia black or blackish colour. Compare earlier use of Nigritia as a place name in English context:a1712 J. Barbot Descr. N. & S.-Guinea Introd., in Churchill's Coll. Voy. (1732) V. 5/1 These countries were commonly call'd Nigritia from their antient inhabitants, the Nigritae; which name the antients took from their black colour.
