Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian nilas.

Etymology: < Russian regional (northern, Archangel, and White Sea) nilas (1844 or earlier; also recorded in forms nilos, 1910 or earlier, nylas, 1856 or earlier), probably < a Finnic root *nila, lit. ‘slippery slime’, or *nilo- to come loose easily (originally of bark at sap-time).It has also been suggested that Russian regional nilas, nylas is a variant of nalys ( < na on to + lys white or bald place), but nalys is not recorded until 1890 and the derivation anyway seems improbable.

A type of ice which forms on a calm sea as a flexible dull grey crust up to 10 cm thick.
