Origin: Probably a borrowing from Bengali. Etymon: Bengali nīl.

Etymology: Probably originally < Bengali nīl (adjective) dark blue, (noun) blue colour, indigo < Sanskrit nīla dark blue (see anil n.). The form nilley may reflect Hindi nīle, plural; the form nilla may reflect a Hindi singular back-formation from this.

Now rare.

A kind of Indian silk or similar fabric. Usually in plural: such fabric collectively.
