Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nocīvus.
Etymology: < classical Latin nocīvus harmful < nocēre to hurt, injure (see nocent n. and adj.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Middle French, French nocif (early 16th cent.; second half of the 15th cent. as noxif).
Now rare.
Harmful, injurious.
