单词 ninevite
释义

Nineviten.adj.

Brit. /ˈnɪnᵻvʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈnɪnəˌvaɪt/
Forms: Old English Niniuete (plural), 1500s Niniuyte, 1500s Nyniuite, 1500s–1600s Niniuite, 1500s–1600s Ninivite, 1600s– Ninevite; also Scottish pre-1700 Niniueite.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ninivita.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Ninivita, noun and adjective (Vulgate; Hellenistic Greek Νινευῖται , plural (New Testament)) < Ninive Nineveh (Vulgate; Hellenistic Greek Νινευή (Septuagint), Hebrew Nīnĕwēh ) + -ita -ite suffix1. With use as adjective compare French ninivite (1840; attested earlier as noun (1541 in Middle French)).Hebrew Nīnĕwēh represents Assyrian Ninua (Old Babylonian Ninuwā ). Classical authors attributed the foundation of Nineveh (ancient Greek Νίνος , classical Latin Ninos , Ninus ) to a mythical Ninus (ancient Greek Νίνος , classical Latin Ninos , Ninus ), whose tomb was said to have been erected by Semiramis, his queen (fl. 9th cent. b.c.), and was the place where the lovers Pyramus and Thisbe arranged to meet (‘Ninnies toumbe’ in Shakespeare's Mids. N. D. iii. i). Compare Old English Niniueisc , in the same sense. Compare also Ninevitish adj. (and n.)
