Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: bank n.1, -age suffix.
Etymology: < bank n.1 + -age suffix; in quot. 1587 after post-classical Latin ripaticum (1575 in the passage on which the quotation is based; compare rivage n.).Compare also post-classical Latin bancagium , banchagium payment or duty for market stalls (13th cent.; also banchaticum (12th cent.)) and Middle French banchage payment or duty for market stalls (1346 in an apparently isolated example), which are unrelated (compare Middle French banc market stall: see bank n.2).
Now rare.
Payment levied for the use of the banks of a river or other watercourse, esp. for landing or storing goods.
