Origin: A borrowing from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nippon.
Etymology: < Japanese Nippon (more formal variant of usual Nihon) (10th cent.; 1603 as Nippon, Nifon in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), short for Nippon-koku, lit. ‘land of the origin of the sun’ (8th cent. or earlier) < nip-, combining form (before p-) of nichi sun + -pon, combining form of hon origin + -koku country; all elements < Middle Chinese. Compare French nippon, nippon(n)e, adjective (1888).Regional Chinese pronunciation of Nippon eventually gave rise to Japan Japan n. As a country name Nippon (and variants) is found in English contexts from the late 17th cent., and in later use serves as a colloquial alternative to Japan; in some early examples also used erroneously to denote the island of Honshu only.
