Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nitent-, nitēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin nitent-, nitēns shining, glossy, use as adjective of present participle of nitēre to shine (of uncertain origin; perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Early Irish niam (Irish niamh) brightness, beauty, Welsh nwyf vigour (c1300)).
Now chiefly Botany.
Shining; lustrous, glossy. Cf. nitid adj.
