Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nitrate.
Etymology: < French nitrate (L. B. Guyton de Morveau Nomencl. chim. (1787) 49) < nitr- (in nitrique nitric adj.) + -ate -ate suffix4, perhaps after Italian nitrato a salt of nitric acid (a1730; 1694 as adjective). Compare Portuguese nitrato (1873), Spanish nitrato; compare also classical Latin nitrātus mixed with nitrum. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nəi·trĕt) /ˈnaɪtrət/.
