Etymology: < post-classical Latin nodositas complication (late 4th cent.), knottiness of the joints (5th cent.), knotty swelling or protuberance (from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin nōdōsus nodose adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Middle French, French nodosité knotty swelling or tumour (14th cent.), knottiness (1539), Italian nodosità (a1320).
