Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymon: Latin nōsce tē ipsum.
Etymology: < classical Latin nōsce tē ipsum know yourself ( < nōsce , 2nd singular imperative of nōscere to know (see know v.) + , 2nd person pronoun accusative singular + ipsum , reflexive pronoun accusative singular), after ancient Greek γνῶθι σεαυτόν, a phrase inscribed at the shrine of Apollo at Delphi. Compare earlier know thyself at know v. 6b.
‘Know yourself’; the proverb ‘nosce te ipsum’ expressing this. Also in extended use.
