Etymology: < classical Latin nōsce tē ipsum know yourself ( < nōsce , 2nd singular imperative of nōscere to know (see know v.) + tē , 2nd person pronoun accusative singular + ipsum , reflexive pronoun accusative singular), after ancient Greek γνῶθι σεαυτόν, a phrase inscribed at the shrine of Apollo at Delphi. Compare earlier know thyself at know v. 6b.
